Applying to a Haida Gwaii
Semester or Summer Session


Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents of Canada

The information in this section has been provided to let you know the four options you have to apply as a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada in a Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session:

  1. As a The University of British Columbia Student
  2. As a University/College Student not from The University of British Columbia
  3. General Interest For-Credit
  4. General Interest Not-For-Credit/Auditing

1. As a The University of British Columbia Student

The is an individual who is currently a UBC student with a UBC Student Number. The application process for a UBC student starts with completing the Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session application form including the submission of your unofficial transcript and academic referee contact information

Once admitted by HGI, you will be asked to pay a non-refundable program deposit of $500 to secure your seat in the program. This deposit is later applied towards the total HGI Program Fee of your respective Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session. Details on how to submit your payment will be provided to you with your acceptance package.

After you have paid your total HGI Program Fee, HGI will then manually register you in the UBC courses of your respective Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session. You will then need submit payment to UBC for the UBC Tuition Cost for these courses.


2. As a University/College Student not from The University of British Columbia

This is an individual who is currently enrolled at a university in Canada (not UBC) and would like to receive university credit for the courses in the Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session they are applying for. The application process for such an individual also starts with completing the Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session application form including the submission of your unofficial transcript and academic referee contact information

Once admitted by HGI, you will be asked to pay a non-refundable program deposit of $500 to secure your seat in the program. This deposit is later applied towards the total HGI Program Fee of your respective Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session. Details on how to submit your payment will be provided to you with your acceptance package.

To ensure that the UBC credits you earn will be transferred back to your home university, you need to meet with an academic advisor at your home university to obtain a letter of permission confirming course credit transfer. Make sure your letter of permission includes:

a) Your home university’s letterhead
b) A list of the courses you will take with HGI
c) The academic session you are applying to (i.e., which term you will be a part of)
d) Your current bachelor program and academic standing

You will then be asked to proceed to the UBC Non-Degree Studies webpage, and follow the directions for applying to become a UBC Visiting Student. Additional information specific to applying for HGI courses are provided in the attached Guide for Visiting Students.

Once you have been admitted to UBC, and paid the UBC tuition deposit and total HGI Program Fee, please contact HGI and we will manually enrol you in the courses for your respective Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session. You will then need to submit payment to UBC for the UBC Tuition Cost for these courses.


3. General Interest For-Credit

This is an individual who is interested take the courses of a Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session for general interest and for-credit, and are not currently enrolled at a university/college. The application process for such an individual also starts with completing the Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session application form including the submission of your unofficial transcript and academic referee contact information.

Once admitted by HGI, you will be asked to pay a non-refundable program deposit of $500 to secure your seat in the program. This deposit is later applied towards the total HGI Program Fee of your respective Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session. Details on how to submit your payment will be provided to you with your acceptance package.

You will then be asked to proceed to the UBC Non-Degree Studies webpage, and follow the directions for applying to become a UBC Access and Unclassified Student. Additional information specific to applying for HGI courses are provided in the attached Guide for Access Students and Guide for Unclassified Students.

Once you have been admitted to UBC, and paid the UBC Tuition Deposit and total HGI Program Fee, please contact HGI and we will manually enrol you in the courses for your respective Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session. You will then need to submit payment to UBC for the remaining UBC Tuition Cost for these courses.


4. General Interest Not-For-Credit/Auditing

This is an individual who would like to take the courses of a Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session not for credit and would like to audit the courses and in turn the program. When a participant decides to audit a HGI course we expect that the individual will fully participate in the class e.g., completing the required readings, assignments and contributing to classroom discussions and group work.

Haida Gwaii Institute courses aim to be interactive and experiential rather than heavily lecture based. HGI strives to create a safe space to foster connection and build a community of learners, and student participation is an important element for this. Every student is expected to contribute and be prepared to meaningfully discuss content and materials.

Individuals who are considering auditing a course are encouraged to reach out to HGI (hg.institute@ubc.ca) to discuss expectations and requirements.
