  1. As a The University of British Columbia International Student
  2. As an International University/College Student not from The University of British Columbia
  3. General Interest For-Credit
  4. General Interest Not-For-Credit/Auditing

Please reach out to our team at hg.institute@ubc.ca for additional information, questions or assistance with the application process.

1. As a The University of British Columbia International Student

This is an individual who is currently a UBC international student with a UBC Student Number. The application process for a UBC international student starts with completing the Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session application form including the submission of your unofficial transcript and academic referee contact information

Once admitted by HGI, you will be asked to pay a non-refundable program deposit of $500 to secure your seat in the program. This deposit is later applied towards the total HGI Program Fee of your respective Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session. Details on how to submit your payment will be provided to you with your acceptance package.

After you have paid your total HGI Program Fee, HGI will then manually register you in the UBC courses of your respective Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session. You will then need submit payment to UBC for the UBC Tuition Cost for these courses as an international student/non-resident of Canada.

2. As an International University/College Student not from The University of British Columbia

This is an individual who is an international student/non-resident of Canada at university/college in Canada or university outside of Canada, and would like to receive university credit for the courses in the Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session they are applying for. The application process for such an individual also starts with completing the Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session application form including the submission of your unofficial transcript and academic referee contact information

To ensure that the UBC credits you earn will be transferred back to your home university, you need to meet with an academic advisor at your home university to obtain a letter of permission confirming course credit transfer. Make sure your letter of permission includes:

a) Your home university’s letterhead
b) A list of the courses you will take with HGI
c) The academic session you are applying to (i.e., which term you will be a part of)
d) Your current bachelor program and academic standing

You will then be asked to proceed to the UBC Non-Degree Studies webpage, and follow the directions for applying to become a UBC Visiting Student. Additional information specific to applying for HGI courses are provided in the attached Guide for Visiting Students.

Once you have been admitted to UBC, and paid the UBC tuition deposit and total HGI Program Fee, please contact HGI and we will manually enrol you in the courses for your respective Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session. You will then need to submit payment to UBC for the UBC Tuition Cost for these courses as an international student/non-resident of Canada.

3. General Interest For-Credit

This is an individual who is not currently enrolled at a university or college, is a non-resident of Canada, and would like to receive university credit for your courses in the Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session they are applying for. The application process for such an individual also starts with completing the Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session application form including the submission of your unofficial transcript and academic referee contact information.

You will then be asked to proceed to the UBC Non-Degree Studies webpage, and follow the directions for applying to become a UBC Access and Unclassified Student. Additional information specific to applying for HGI courses are provided in the attached Guide for Visiting Students and Guide for Unclassified Students.

Once you have been admitted to UBC, and paid the UBC Tuition Deposit and total HGI Program Fee, please contact HGI and we will manually enrol you in the courses for your respective Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session. You will then need to submit payment to UBC for the remaining UBC Tuition Cost for these courses as an international student/non-resident of Canada.

4. General Interest Not-For-Credit/Auditing

This is an individual who would like to take the courses in a Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session not for credit and is non-resident of Canada. You have the option to audit the courses in the program. When a participant decides to audit a HGI course we expect that the individual will fully participate in the class (e.g., completing the required readings, assignments and contributing to classroom discussions and group work).

Haida Gwaii Institute courses aim to be interactive and experiential rather than heavily lecture based. HGI strives to create a safe space to foster connection and build a community of learners, and student participation is an important element for this. Every student is expected to contribute and be prepared to meaningfully discuss content and materials.

Non-residents of Canada who are interested in auditing a Haida Gwaii Semester or Summer Session are encouraged to reach out to HGI (hg.institute@ubc.ca) to discuss prior to applying.
